2016 has forced people to do some pretty crazy things. Following the death of Carrie Fisher, another well-regarded celebrity lost in a strangely tragic year, a man launched a GoFundMe to ‘protect Betty White from 2016.’
Betty White is the lovable grandma best known for her role in Golden Girls. She has been around forever, as she now stands at the ripe age of 94. A South Carolina man and apparently a massive White fan, Demetrios Hrysikos has created a page to keep her safe in these seemingly treacherous times.
“Help 2016 catch these hands if it goes anywhere near Betty White! If she’s okay with it I will fly to where ever Betty White is and keep her safe till Jan 1, 2017,” writes Hrysikos on the page.
Hrysikos is clearly joking but the sentiment is somewhat admirable. In only a day, the page raised $1,670 in donations. Hrysikos also clarified that in the likely case that White doesn’t want him to come protect her, he will donate all of the proceeds raised by the page to the Spartanburg Little Theater, a school that promotes and teaches acting on stage and screen. While we are optimistic Betty will make it out of 2016 safely, perhaps Hrysikos’ protection can guarantee that.
